3 Fun Soccer Fitness Drills You Can Teach

Soccer is a physical game and requires players to be fit and in top form, no matter what their age. It involves kids to keep running, sprinting, jumping, kicking, tackling, turning, and twisting. Their fitness regimens become even more important as they mature and face the increased stresses and strains of the competitive environment.

Soccer fitness drills are very important. A key to a young soccer player’s fitness is providing their body with the accurate impetus that has the capacity to take their game to the next level. Stability and hard work in building and then maintaining stamina are important for training and conditioning in soccer.

The two main components in improving player’s fitness in a schedule are aerobic and anaerobic activities.  These activities help build player’s energy that lasts a full training match.  This will also develop their ability to constantly run during the entire match.

If you wish to see your kids develop into expert all-round soccer players, you should focus a lot on player’s power & strength.

With the intensity of competition increasing, physical strength of a player will prove to be of immense help on the field. It will allow players to defend the ball from their opponents, manoeuvre their position on field, and aid them in winning one on one battle every now and then.

Weight training is another vital component of improving young player’s power and strength. However, don’t let kids spend all their time in the gym doing weight training. Weight training alone does not improve kid’s performance on the field. Functional training in place of weight training should be incorporate in the training and conditioning routine of players to bring about progress in field performance.

Functional training includes various exercises performed on the field. Players are made to practice a variety of activities during their training sessions. These activities focus on player’s full body movements intended to develop their overall performance by promoting an increase in stamina and power.

Let’s discuss a few soccer conditioning and fitness drills in the following paragraphs. These drills are easy to execute and effective in improving performance on and off the field.

1. The Shoot from 4 Corners Soccer Fitness Drill is aimed at improving quickness and lateral speed needed in the game.

You’ll need to set four cones in a 15X15 yards grid (see figure above).

Starting from cone 1, tell the players to run towards cone 2. They must concentrate on quick starts scuffling to cone 3. Shift ground to cone 4 and then scuffle back to cone 1. Scuffle across the grid to cone 3 and shift ground to cone 4. Then run past cone 2. Make sure they are quick in changing their direction and speed.

You should repeat this soccer fitness drill 4 to 5 times taking a 1 to 2 minute break between repetitions.

2. Quick Shuttle

Set 2 markers at a distance of 20 yards from each other. Put 2 more markers in the middle at a distance of 3 yards on each side (see figure above).

Instruct the players to start from the marker placed at middle of the left side and run towards one end (10 yards). Take a turn and run towards the other end (20 yards) without any delay, Then run towards the finish point (10 yards).

The players should change their foot at each marker and attempt to touch the ground their hands.

3. March in/March out

Soccer Conditioning Drills

To set-up this drill, you need to position 6-8 cones in a straight line, 3 yards apart. In the middle of each set of cones, place a cone each 3 yards to the left (see figure above).

The players should start running from one cone to the next and touch each cone with their hand by bending down. Your attention should be on taking quick side steps, instead of taking turns to face the cone and sprint forward which takes comparatively more time.

These drills help players use their imagination and creativity to find out and practice what works best for them.

Another aspect the importance of which cannot be ignored teaching soccer fitness drills is the element of fun. In a playing environment that is exciting and fun, players learn more, enjoy more and develop an open mind. An open mind allows them to think flexibly, to become mindful of various possibilities that can occur in any given situation on the field.  This will prepare them physically as well as mentally to face any unprecedented event while playing a live match.
