4321 Soccer Formation - The Perfect Soccer Formation

4321 soccer formation is only one of the various formations that are used to play the game. This soccer formation is also called the, 'system of play'. The soccer formation can have a huge impact on the performance of the player and the team on the whole.

The number of players playing on the field varies according to their ages and the associations they are playing for. This number can range from 5 to a maximum of 11 per team.

4321 is one of the soccer field formations, which consist of four defenders, three mid fielders, two forwards and a goalie.

The goalie is generally not counted in the 4321 equation. This formation is thus also known as the 432 formation. There was a time when this formation was widely used at all levels.

However, nowadays the 4321 soccer formation is primarily used to train younger athletes who have just started learning the game. The formation is easy to learn and play.

What Do The Numbers In 4321 Stand For?

• There is one goalkeeper in a team thus the number 1. It is his job to defend the goal so he is required to stay close to the goal. He wears a different colored shirt than his teammates, so it is very easy to identify a goalie. When a goalie is in the penalty box, he can pick the ball with his hands; if he is out of the box then he cannot use his hands.

• The defenders are usually 2, 3 or 4 in number. They are also called Fullbacks. These players play the closest to the goal. It is the job of the goalie and the defenders to stop the opponent team's goals.

• In a 4321 football formation there are three midfielders. These players play between the Fullbacks and the Forwards. They are placed in the 'Middle Third' of the field.

• The Forwards play closer to the opposing team's goal. This goal post is guarded by the opponent's goalie.

The primary scorers are the Forwards, even though the Midfielders and the Forwards score occasionally. Besides these positions there are another two special positions, that of the 'Sweeper' and the 'Stopper'. The Sweeper plays behind the Fullbacks.

The Stopper plays between the Midfielders and the Fullbacks. These players give additional defensive strength to the soccer field formation. There is no compulsion to have these players on the team. That means it is up to the team's discretion to use these players.
