The tactical choices help in determining the kind of formation that has to be used. The playing style of the team describes the formation they might prefer.

The players could change their formations if they wish to change their strategy or reduce the loss of a strong player. Some formations also change vigorously with the movement of the players. Like the 4-2-4 formation can easily become the 2-4-4 formation.
While teaching soccer formation 4-4-2, the defenders can be lined up in a diamond shape. In this manner the last player can be utilized as the sweeper to clear the ball to the other defenders and the mid fielders.
