Soccer Player Positions - A Step By Step Introduction
There are several soccer player positions that you can try for your players. However, the team formation will basically depend upon the specific age group and the kind of league the players are participating in. Let me give you a brief insight into some of the important positions of players in a soccer game.
GoalkeeperWhen it comes to positions of players on a soccer field, no matter how many players are participating in the game, there can be one goalkeeper in the team. The primary task of the goalie is to defend the goal for his/her team. He/She is positioned close to his/her team's goal. The goalie must wear a different colored jersey so that he/she could easily be recognized. The goalkeeper has the liberty to use his/her hands to throw the ball. However, it is mandatory for him/her to use his/her feet only when it comes to “throw-ins” or “re-start” situations.
DefendersNext to the goalie come the soccer player positions for the defenders. The first two defenders are known as fullbacks. These players are placed quite close to the goalie of their team – generally on the left and the right side. The main task and responsibility of these players is to stop the opponent team from scoring goals. However, it is very important for you to understand that in a game of soccer, every player must act as a defender. You can teach the basics of defense to every player by explaining the concept of first and second defense. Besides the fullbacks, there can other defenders as well, in a soccer game.
MidfieldersAs the name suggests, the midfielders are the soccer player positions in the middle of the field. They play at the most crucial position in the game of soccer. Whatever happens on the field usually have these midfielders in the middle of it. These are the most versatile players of the team, as they have to help both the forwards and the defenders.
For example, it is their responsibility to pass the ball to the forwards in a way so that they could have an easy opportunity to score goals. At the same time, they are also supposed to give full support to the defenders. In 11 player soccer field positions, the midfielders are usually classified into offensive midfielders and defensive midfielders.
ForwardsForwards, as the name suggests, consist of the players who are positioned closest to the opponent's goal. Their specific soccer player positions allow them to attack on the goal. Their primary task is to convert the opportunities into goals.
