Getting To Know Soccer Team Player Positions

An intelligent strategy in soccer hinges a great deal on soccer team players positions . Every soccer coach has realized that this aspect can never be over emphasized.

So, what are the positions in soccer? Here are the descriptions of some key soccer positions.

Sweeper

A sweeper is a tactical position, popularized by the German legend Franz Beckenbauer in the 1970s. A sweeper is the last player in defense after the goalkeeper. With his sharp mind and reflexes, a sweeper bridges the gap left behind by the defenders, analyzes the progress of the game, anticipates where open angles are formed and makes instant decisions to tackle them.

Striker

A striker is a player with a key ability to score goals. Unlike a forward, a striker does not keep shifting positions to the sides. A star striker aggressively approaches the enemy goal, attracts defenders and scores goal at the first opportunity. For flexibility, he stays in the middle and he is usually marked by at least one player.

Forward

A forward is one of the most important soccer team players positions . He not only heads for the goal but also moves backward to support the midfield.

Attacking midfielder

Attacking midfielders are the most aggressive players in the game. The midfielder's job requires skill, stamina and most of all, the ability to play with his mind. When a skilful midfielder is dribbling, he not only keeps an eye on the ball but also has a look at the open spaces so that he can create strategic spaces. Attacking midfielders need many passes from fellow teammates to coordinate an offensive move.

Defensive Midfielder

This is the backbone among the positions on a soccer team . Defensive midfielder operates in the front of the defense, between the stopper and the offensive midfielders. While attacking, the defensive midfielder stays behind the offensive lines, collects the rebound and mass kicks.

Winger

Winger is quite a common term among positions on a soccer team . Wingers, also called outside midfielders, attack players who dribble the ball forward and serve in crosses.

Outside Midfielder

Fullback
