How Do You Play Defensive Soccer With Strategy And Tactics?

Defense or defending soccer goal is perhaps the most important tactic that a team needs to perfect if it has to go ahead and perform well. How do you play defensive football? Often defense or rather the perfection of defense comes across as a challenging task for players.

The coach here needs to be much more careful while coaching his team and should himself have a clear enough idea of what he wants. Of course, this will mean that a thorough study of the opposition is imperative as well.

Techniques To Play Defensive Soccer

How you play defensive soccer will determine how well you can understand the tactics of your opponents. Man to man marking and zonal marking are two defense techniques that you need to perfect.

The best way to do this is to give the players specialist positions. This is a great help particularly when the team is under pressure. If the corner is your vulnerable area then you need to be protecting it with a specialist position in front of your penalty area.

The most important position for a team if it wants to reduce the goals conceded from the corner is the position next to the corner taker.

'How to play defensive football,' is not a straightforward question which might be resolved with a fixed answer. The answer will only come with experience. The position next to the corner taker should be so stationed that it prevents the full flight of the striker.

This not just saves a possible goal but also helps to protect the goalie and the defenders. To be a smart defender in soccer training one needs to follow the targets in a realistic fashion. Also the coach needs to set targets which are -: precise, achievable, and well timed.

The foremost concern of the players should be to clear the ball as quickly as possible when it enters the penalty area. This, of course cannot be a strategy that has 100% success. The coach therefore needs to counsel his players that a 50% success rate should be a minimum target.

This will make it achievable, not just physically, but for the psyche of the player(s) as well. By perfecting your corner defense you will achieved for yourself at least one answer for the question, 'How to play defensive football?'
