Before learning how to teach children the soccer tactics, let us first understand the psychology of kids under six. They are less attentive, unable to think abstractly and above all, they are not even able to identify correctly between the left and the right foot.
So, how do you teach soccer under 6 defense tactics? The best advice in this case, is to leave them alone and not to teach them any tactics. At the most what you can do is make them understand that they have to defend the ball and not let it hit a goal.

However, make sure that the emphasis is more on teaching them a good defense body posture, as that is the key element determining the success or failure of a defense.
Training Defensive Strategies For Players U10 And U11
- U10 soccer strategy of defense: Split the players into groups and provide each of them with a ball. Let the players in the group face each other and ask the player with the ball to act as the attacker and the other as a defender.
The defender should keep an approximate distance of three yards from the attacker and try to defend the ball from making a goal. You can ask the players to switch positions. Here the emphasis should be more on the defender to focus upon the movement of the ball and defense rather than attempting to win the ball.
- U11 soccer tactics for defense: Divide the players into two groups. Provide a ball to one-half of the players that is one team. Now the players who do not have the ball should try to steal it from the other team.
Here you can teach your players the technical points of group defense. Teach them the attacks of a defender and emphasize on the players to learn the proper techniques of shielding and rectify their shielding errors, if any.
Overall, we can conclude that teaching soccer under 6 defense tactics is a more difficult task when compared to teaching the same to the u10 and u11 age groups. Therefore, if you want your players to understand the concept fully, it would be better to start teaching the basics of defense only from the age of 10 and above.
