There are more than one forward in the team, more than one defender, and more than one midfielder in the team, but there is just one soccer goalie.
The goalkeeper has the most important task assigned to them, as they have to save the ball, hit by the opponent team from turning into goal.
Therefore, it is important for the coaches, to give additional focus on improving the skills of the soccer goalie (even in soccer tryouts).
Following are some of the things that the coaches must teach the goalkeeper in an impressive and effective way:
- The goalie must have the ability to pull the ball tightly into the body. They need to learn and practice, how to keep their body in front of the ball.
- Another important thing that the soccer goalie must be aware of is, regarding the penalty strokes. Penalty corner is a situation, when the goalie has to deal with the attacker face to face.
Regarding soccer goalkeeper drills, the coach must teach that the goals are first scored in the mind of the attacker and then in the goalpost.
Therefore, the soccer goalie must have the ability to judge to read the mind of the player with the ball.
