Offensive Soccer Rules - Understanding The Offside
One of the most controversial of all offensive soccer rules is the offside. This is mainly due to two reasons- one, it's a very confusing rule. Sometimes the coaches themselves have a hard time keeping it straight and this often leads to difficulty on the field.
Two, the rule pops up during the most heated and intense moments of the game. As a result, it's easy to forget it, especially when your team is making a play for a goal. It can be very frustrating to keep getting called offside every time your team gets near the goal.
What Is Offside?
The truth is that when it comes to offensive football laws, the offside is still one that is subject to debate. When it comes down to individual plays, there are usually so many loopholes involved that the final decision just comes down to the referee. In some community soccer tournaments, special rules have been laid out concerning offside to try and avoid confusion on the field.
Unfortunately, defining the offside isn't as simple as soccer & kickoff & score & rule. It can be described as a violation that occurs when an offensive player has possession of the ball and there are less than two opposing players between the offensive player and the goal line. These two opposing players are usually the goalie and one defender.
This violation means the team loses possession of the ball. So why did this rather confusing rule come about? It was started to discourage the practice of 'cherry picking' among offensive players.
What This Means To Your Team
Like it or not, offside is just one of soccer rules of the game. Your best bet is to make sure your offensive line-up is aware of this rule and knows how to play around it.
First of all, if you play community soccer, check if there are any special guidelines concerning the offside. Being aware of them beforehand can save you a lot of trouble later on.
One of the most important offensive soccer rules is to prep your line-up for the 'offside trap'. This is something the defenders might do and if you're not aware of it, it's easy to fall prey to it. The defenders might lure the offensive players forward and then suddenly fall back, thus drawing an offside foul and gaining possession of the ball.
Offside can be one of the most frustrating of all offensive soccer rules. Make sure your offensive line-up keeps an eye open for the offside trap. Also teach them to pass the ball when a potential offside situation occurs.Offensive Soccer Rules | Soccer Rules
