Teaching Youth Soccer: How To Start

If you are a new coach and are looking for how to start teaching youth soccer, the following soccer articles and tips may put you on the right path:

  • Since, you are teaching soccer drills for youth to young players, it is important for you to discourage them to make long passes because the chances are that they will end up making inaccurate passes.
  • You must teach them regarding the importance of pace, distance, and accuracy, in making passes to team-mates. Among all the three basic elements of making a good pass, accuracy is the most important.

An inaccurate pass, no matter how tactically they have been made, is useless and instead of helping you win the match, they can put your team on the loser’s side.

  • While teaching youth soccer, you should also encourage the player to keep the possession of the ball in situations, when there are no team-mates around the ball carrier to take passes.

However, it does not mean that they should try to go ahead with the ball and attempt scoring goals.

It just means that they don’t have to lose the possession of the ball, until they find a suitable time and opportunity to make a successful pass to the team-mate.

Teaching Youth Soccer: Give And Go

There is an extensive range of things that you need to work on, while teaching youth soccer. Here, I am sharing with you a simple but impressive drill that will help your players learn some excellent shooting and passing skills.

As per this drill, you have to make your players practice a real looking game. Your focus is to encourage the players to pass the ball to a teammate and run towards the goal and get the pass back at a specific point and then shoot the ball in an effort to score a goal.

Everything must be done very quickly and with great accuracy. Following are some important coaching points that the coaches must take care of, while teaching youth soccer through this drill:

  • It is not just that the players have to shoot the ball in any way and score a goal. They have to use the correct technique, depending upon the specific situation.
  • The time factor is also very important. Passing the ball, then running to a specific position near the goalpost and then getting the pass back - everything has to be done very quickly. The timing must be more than excellent.
  • All the passes must be accurate.
